4 Tips for Working on a Cross-Functional Team - The Muse
4 Tips for Working on a Cross-Functional Team - The Muse4 Tips for Working on a Cross-Functional TeamWorking cross-functionally- a.k.a., working with gruppes other than your own- is an inevitable part of your career at some point or another. And doing it well can generate new and exciting ideas, improve your interpersonal skills, and boost your company culture, productivity, and happiness. However, dealing with a cross-functional team isnt always a walk in the park. Any new group of people will come with an array of personalities, ways of communicating, competing priorities, and more. Here are four critical things to consider when working with other teams 1. You Cant Work Well With People You Dont KnowSounds obvious right? But youd be surprised how many people forget this simple fact. So, be proactive in meeting new people outside of your direct team before you have to work together on a specific project. Go grab coffee or lunch or approach them at your next happy hour to learn more about their role. And once youre paired off, dont jump straight to business. Ask your teammate about what theyre aiming to get out of the project, their preferences for communication, and their passions. Getting other peoples perspectives and leveraging their unique talents can be hugely beneficial, so be sure you have all the facts before delegating work.2. You Need to Understand Other Peoples PrioritiesIts important to keep your projects objectives and deadlines in mind, but also understand that your project is just one of many your co-workers might be working on. So, when getting started, gather insight into how others are budgeting their time to quickly understand expectations and best organize your schedule. Also, get a well-rounded perspective on the projects relative importance by asking team members what outcomes theyre looking for. unterstellung responses can be telling for understanding how to prioritize your responsibilities. Finally, know that this goes both ways- make it clear to your colleagues what youre working on outside this project and what times you may not be available.3. You Have to Emphasize Good CommunicationRule number one in successful project management- never let your team be surprised. This means investing time and energy in good communication- in person, over email, and during meetings. Go into meetings with a clear agenda, use company updates to share your progress with outside stakeholders, set up weekly check-ins, and ask everyone to share their progress with their managers. This ensures your leadership is on board, youre following the right protocol, and youre holding people accountable. This also means setting clear expectations and roles from the beginning, encouraging cross-collaboration, and acknowledging when others do good work- all of which contribute to a motivated and happy team.4. You Should Be Ready to Face Difficult People and Sticky SituationsThe reality of a cross-functional project is that there may be times when teammates disagree, dont get along, or arent pulling their weight. Knowing how to mediate and influence a conversation can help you work with others to create and agree on a strategy that everyones happy with. This doesnt mean selling or forcing people to take on your ideas, but rather helping direct their thinking to the bigger picture- how can we all compromise to move forward? If, for example, you have an idea that youre trying to push, sit down one on one with your project partner to vet it and get their reaction before taking it to other team members or people at higher levels. This shows you respect their opinion and want their buy-in- immediately encouraging trust and collaboration.Working on a cross-functional team can be one of the hardest endeavors you take on, but when you get everyone pushing toward a common goal, its incredibly gratifying. When you find yourself in a frustrating situation, focus on whats best for the company. This will allow you to be more strategic and think and act like a leader. Remember, you have many years of working with people across groups, so learn and grow from each experience. Focus on these tips, and youll become a master of partnerships in no time

Elon Musk says we will have self driving cars as early as next year
Elon Musk says we will have self driving cars as early as next yearElon Musk says we will have self driving cars as early as next yearAn interview conducted with a 24-year-old Elon Musk back in 1999, cautioned us against being too quick to brand his ambitious projections as quixotic. Before the turn of the millennium, Musk championed the internet as the new viable landscape for exchanging goods by way of injecting a large portion of his net worth into a fledging company-then called X.com, now known ubiquitously as PayPal. To many of those in the know at the time, the internet was but a provisional fad.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe prolific entrepreneur has rustled media feathers once again with another bold claim to add to the list that perpetually folds industry experts into two camps the optimistically curious and the practical detractors.Musk claims that as early as next year Tesla drivers will be able to sleep behind the wheel of their cars.I think we will be feature complete, full self-driving, this year - meaning the car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, and take you all the way to your destination without an intervention - this year.I would say I am of certain of that. That is not a question mark, he said in the interview. The naysayersSoup to nuts, statistics and spectators seem to have join forces against Musks lofty prediction.John Alexander, policy director for FCAI, for one, rejects the realization of fully automated vehicles on the horizon, even while conceding the incredible speed at which the science behind them is hurling forward.Even with this rapid development, mass-market introduction of very high or full levels of driving automation systems is unlikely until at least 2030, Alexander said.AutoNation CEO, Mike Jackson went as far as to call Elon Musks confidence on the subject unethical. Karl Brauer, who was pe rhaps a touch more charitable, repudiated Musks portend with a sober consideration of the very real challenges currently menacing the prospect of fully self-driving carsThere are so many different ways that a car has to be able to deal with driving weather, lighting, traffic, pedestrians, bicyclists. To say youll have all conditions solved in the next 12 to 18 months, nobody else is making that claim and there are some pretty big companies out there like Google who are doing this and have been doing this for a decade. Is a self-driving car that far off though? All the critics certainly have legs to stand on, but in defense of the famed Musk hyperbole, a fully functional self-driving car is not exactly science fiction anymore.Wes Messamore recently indexed all the ways the future Tesla heralds is very achievable in the near future. Our Summer Internship at Simply Hired A True Story
Our Summer Internship at Simply Hired A True Story Our Summer Internship at Simply Hired A True Story This summer we were Brand Ambassadors Interns. It was our job to spread the word about Simply Hiredâs resources for college students and new graduates. We really enjoyed sharing resources that as college students we both found valuable. It was great to spend our summer together and with the Simply Hired family. As our internship comes to an end, we were given the opportunity to write about our experience at Simply Hired, what we learned and how to avoid common intern mistakes. 7 Lessons We Learned 1. How to Work on a Team You arenât part of just one team. We found that by learning about the other parts of the company, we were better able to understand our own work as interns. For example, after getting the chance to meet with the engineering team, we were better equipped to answer all the questions career centers had about the inner workings of our job search pages. 2. How to Work with a Friend Working with a friend can be awesome. We were lucky that we worked so well together. From the start, we knew one anotherâs strengths and weaknesses and we were able to accomplish much more together. While we have heard that working with a friend can be quite tricky, the most important thing we found was how to find a balance between being friends and coworkers. 3. Taking over Social Media We were given a really great opportunity to take over the Instagram channel for a day. They let us take the reins and trusted us to create each post on our own. Check us out on the Simply Hired instagram! #Interntakeover2015 #simplytakeover 4. Opportunities to grow It turns out weaknesses are not a bad thing. They are opportunities to be better. This summer we used our weaknesses to help us improve our work process and become efficient and successful. Over the summer we learned the best days and times to reach out to people. We found that July is a very popular vacation month, but not to worry, everyone will be back on August 3rd. In addition, it is best to avoid contacting people on Monday morning. People are much happier on Friday. 5. Being confident with your projects and ideas Simply Hired helped by creating an environment that encouraged us to get involved and to share our work. Working with a friend meant that there was always someone to turn to for encouragement and support. During our time here we had the opportunity to host a company-wide competition. We were able to work on it together, which made presenting it to the entire company a little less scary. 6. Managing stress Our manager gave us some really great tips for managing stress and supported us through it all. Knowing we had someone to turn to when we needed help was a huge factor in our success. We were both given weekly tasks to accomplish to help us reach our overall summer goals. This helped us to keep organized and manage our stress while also staying on track to being successful. 7. The importance of having a strong mentor Our mentor was amazing. She took us under her wing and made sure we learned as much as possible in our time here. We met every single week to discuss our progress, obstacles and best practices. She made this summer about more than just the tasks we were doing by helping us grow as individuals and understand our strengths and weaknesses. 7 Common Simply Intern Mistakes 1. Be Aware So our sales team has NERF guns. When there is a full sales team NERF war going on, you have to be aware of your surroundings if you want to make it out alive. And if you plan on storing darts make sure you hide them well or your stash will be compromised. 2. Ordering Lunch First of all, we are really lucky that Simply Hired provides us lunch every day. The catch: Order by 10 AM or be hungry. The overwhelming sadness and regret that occurs at 10:01 is unexplainable. 3. Answering the Phone Know how to answer the phone. The first time someone called us back we were so excited but quickly realized that we didnât know how to pick up the phone yet. 4. Parking For some reason we both decided that there was one parking spot that was superior to the rest. It was never said out loud, but since that day it was our No. 1 goal every morning to get that spot. Because of this, we were always on time for work. 5. Know Where You Are Always have a map of the conference rooms so that when itâs time for a meeting you donât look like a lost kid looking for their mom in the grocery store. No one wants to be THAT intern. 6. Keep Work at Work As part of our job, we had to make a lot of phone calls. We left our work number so many times that at one point, we accidentally gave out our work number when ordering takeout one weekend. 7. Check Before Sending We learned Gmail had an undo buttonâ¦but not until our last week. So what did we even do this summer? We learned a lot about Simply Hired, a unique company, that is set on helping people find jobs they love. We were able to talk to people from all aspects of the company and understand how they each contribute to making Simply Hired successful. We participated in meetings, campaigns and brainstorm sessions. We also constructed emails, campaigns, social media posts and even hosted a company competition. As college students ourselves, we know how hard the job search can be. We were really lucky to intern at Simply Hired and hope that everyone else can find an internship they love as well.

The Changes To Make If The Recruiter Ignores You
The Changes To Make If The Recruiter Ignores You The Changes To Make If The Recruiter Ignores You I received the following inbox on LinkedIn: âHello. My name is Joe Blow and I work in marketing, sales, and business development in the greater Philadelphia area. I see that youâre local to me, and I was wondering if you know of any connections who may possibly be helpful to me in my next career move? Thank you for your time.â Iâm going to tell you right now: thatâs an email that got ignored. If you write to a recruiter or any LinkedIn contact any version of a message that smells like this, youâre going to get ignored too. And you should. Let me provide an explanation that I hope will prevent you from skipping unawares down the same wrong path. Remember That LinkedIn Is A Social Network The 1st rule of thumb on this platform is: be sociable. What you would do in the real world on earth, is very likely what you should do on LinkedIn. How well would you be received if you walked up to a stranger at a networking event and immediately said your expertise is A, B, and C, and do they know anyone you should speak to? More importantly, how well would YOU receive a person who approached you that way? Demonstrate that you care about some fact that has something to do with the person youâre approaching. Take a moment to review their profile and identify some commonality or point of interest. Doing so goes a long way to warming people up before you go for the jugular and ask for something. Speaking of which⦠Donât Ask For Anything Just donât. Especially if the person doesnât know you from Adam. Here again, put yourself in the other personâs shoes. Recruiters are busy human beings â" just like YOU! When the 1st thing you see from a stranger is a request, how motivated do you feel to jump up and fulfill that request? Take on the same mindset that you have on Facebook or Twitter. On those platforms when people are having conversations, you can jump right in and say whatever is relevant. That natural process can happen on LinkedIn as well. Recruiters constantly post job opportunities directly in their normal news feeds. And you know whatâs beautiful about that? The comments section. Make a comment. Iâd rather see you do that then go barreling through a strangerâs inbox. Itâs Give & Take. But Pretend Itâs Just Give I like to know that someoneâs interested in something thatâs interesting and relevant to me, as opposed to pushing their marketing messages on me or immediately expecting me to fulfill their requests. So, do you know what you have to give to a recruiter? Value. Tell the recruiter exactly what you can do in a specific position the recruiter is filling right now. Make it short, sweet, and to the point. When you approach the recruiter this way, it softens up your eventual request, because he or she can see the value in pursuing a conversation with you. These simple changes to the LinkedIn messages you send recruiters can change your job search 180 degrees. When youâre sociable, donât go in on the ask immediately, and give value, I promise that you stand far above the other 500 people THAT DAY who are sending recruiters tone deaf messages.

Last-minute office-appropriate costumes to buy or make
Last-minute office-appropriate costumes to buy or make Last-minute office-appropriate costumes to buy or make Though you have likely outgrown trick-or-treating, Halloween is one of the holidays thatâs fun to celebrate, no matter your age. From house-hopping in your funniest (scariest or ahem, risque) costume to hosting a bring-your-own-pumpkin party with friends, October 31 is a more laid-back holiday compared to other winter-time celebrations. Many companies take advantage of the spooky spirit in the air by hosting an in-office bash and inviting employees to dress-up and drink up. Because the purpose of Halloween is to take on a new persona, you may be tempted to go wild, but career experts recommend following a few etiquette rules to maintain your respect. Hereâs the deal: While being a team player who participates in-office events is important, you also donât want to show up in something scandalous or suggestive, causing others to raise eyebrows.Hereâs how to navigate this sometimes tricky situation and come out on top:Rules to considerBranding expert Joy Altimare believes there ar e a few standard, across-the-board rules to consider if you want to- um- keep your spot on the board. Though these blanket suggestions are appropriate for most, you know your company culture the best and you should use your smarts to exercise your best judgement when deciding on a get-up. First and foremost, remember you are at work! Altimare recommends walking a fine line between fun and professionalism. You donât want to come across as too stuffy, but you also probably shouldnât wear cut-off pants to parade around your co-workers, or worse, clients. When in doubt, ask a supervisor. If you have a solid idea for a costume but you are unsure if it crosses a line, Altimare suggests speaking with your supervisor or human resources to establish a clear understand of what is deemed acceptable. Clear out your schedule. If you do want to go next level with your attire, complete with wacky makeup and say, wings or a boisterous hat - put blocks on your calendar, Altimare suggests. Sitting in your pod with this crazy costume is probably fine, but meeting with your CEO is likely not. Be sensitive. âYou are a part of a culture ecosystem â" so be sensitive to your co-workers and do not wear anything that could be considered cultural inappropriate, too-gory or political,â Altimare reminds. Costume ideas for allâFirst things first: regardless if youâre male or female, you should feel free and liberated to expand far beyond gender stereotypes. The traditional standards of women wear nurses outfits and men are cowboys is outdated. That being said, career experts have a few ideas for costumes that could work for everyone.Michael Jackson One of career expert Wendi Weinerâs favorite, all-time costumes is Michael Jackson in an 80s or 90s look. âThe accessories and attire can easily be found at a thrift shop, and they donât require much effort,â she explains. Since you will also be mostly covered up, you wonât risk showing off too much skin in the hallways.Whereâs Waldo If youâre part of the crowd that procrastinates your Halloween costume, youâre not alone. Thatâs why Weiner suggests âWhereâs Waldoâ as an idea for last-minute professionals. Not only is it simple to put together, but itâs super-comfortable (and super-kosher) to wear sweatpants on Halloween at work.Starbucks Barista For most office cultures, coffee is at the heart of the cantina. Without, how would 8 a.m. meetings be a possibility, after all? A mid-afternoon trip to Starbucks is daily retreat for plenty of teams, making Starbucks Barista a funny costume idea thatâll make your co-workers chuckle, according to Weiner.Superman or Woman Truly, the options here are endless. You can be Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Superman or Superwoman with a semi-professional Halloween costume inspired by one of DC Comicâs leading heroes. Altimare recommends this look, since you can wear your go-to button-up and jacket, but with a twist.Group costume For a more creative approach, Weiner suggests grabbing the marketing, customer service, engineering or finance team youâre part of and encouraging your colleagues to band together in the name of winning the Halloween costume contest. Group get-ups are not only hilarious when executed well, but take the pressure off of you to find something appropriate. Since youâll all decide together, you know whatever you choose will pass the code of conduct standard.
